A 34 year old Xanxus This section is focused only in the manga, as I never got through the entire anime. In fact, the anime seems to end right around an additional filler arc set in this time frame. Since I want to be as close and specific to Xanxus as possible, I'm sticking with the manga. Almost immediately after the ring battle Tsuna is swept away into the future. He finds out that ten years have passed and that a powerful mafia family called the Millefiore are taking over everything. During his battles he has no idea of what is going on at the main Vongola branch in Italy. Luckily for him, the Varia happen to be there busting up Millefiore heads and taking strongholds. Xanxus makes his appearance when Rasiel of the Millefiore family destroys one of their taken bases. He is recognized instantly as the leader of the Varia, but Rasiel refuses to take him seriously. While trading banter, Xanxus has not revealed his super cool box weapon, Bester. Instead, Xanxus listens to Rasiel's demands and babbling.

He's busy though. Xanxus demands to meet with Byakuren, the leader of the Millefiore. Rasiel insists that all messages will go through him. Unfortunately, Xanxus has the attention span of a cat. While listening to Rasiel prattle on and on about being princely, Xanxus yawns and closes his eyes. This actually gives Xanxus' box weapon a chance to roam and allow the characters to explain the defining elements. The rest of the Varia are battling elsewhere trying to determine if Xanxus is safe after the explosion (no surprise, he is). During this time we find out that Xanxus flames are unique sky and storm. This is also where we learn that Xanxus loses his temper when Sawada's name is mentioned. Rasiel starts to mock Xanxus for being unable to beat 14 year old Sawada. This is still quite the sore subject with Xanxus.

Now you've done it!

Xanxus states that the younger Tsuna hasn't been killed not because he can't do it, but because he values the Vongola at its strongest. He goes so far as to mention that despite internal conflict the Vongola always join forces to overcome outside threats. It is at this point that Xanxus decides that negotiations have broken down and the only thing to do is to kill Rasiel.

Srs bizness Without ever standing up from his throne, Xanxus defeats Rasiel. The Varia join him after the battle. I wanted to note this specific battle because it is the first time you see him in the new arc. In addition, it still highlights some of his lazier habits and his temper. After communication with Tsuna, the Varia decide to keep pressing forward to weed out the Millefiore Family. Squalo goes to assist Tsuna, while Xanxus and the others stay to defend/destroy the stragglers. Xanxus acts as support to the Vongola family, but does not directly report to Sawada, nor does he specifically talk to him (Squalo does the majority of the talking). Xanxus also appears to fight the Funeral Wreaths (the guardians of the Millefiore) along side of Tsuna's men and the allied forces against Byakuren.

Varia to the Rescue In addition to helping out Tsuna, Xanxus goes so far as to save his guardians. He challenges the Funeral Wreaths for the sake of battle, hoping to stomp out their lives for having been a nuisance. During these battles Squalo is presumed dead (in which Xanxus laughs at him again). Through illusions the Varia suffer a great defeat while collecting information. Mukuro fakes everyone's deaths to get an idea of their opponent's abilities. Xanxus deliberately lets his opponent heal so that he can kill him when he is at his best. When Ghost appears, Tsuna shows up and saves everyone. I've summarized badly - I apologize. Mostly, I'm interested in highlighting three things: one, Xanxus admitted that Tsuna keeps the family strong, two, Xanxus is capable of and willing to assist the family, three, he is still the same stubborn and arrogant jerk he always is. He flat out ignores Tsuna and waits for his opponents to heal before killing them (after brutally injuring them in the first place). Xanxus very much enjoys a good battle.
